Happy new financial year! The year is flying by, and there is lots of activity on the horizon here at Committee for Perth. I suspect you might be feeling the same!
I spent the last week in Canberra working collectively alongside five other Committees for Capital Cities, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart. |

We first met in June 2023 to discuss our similarities, differences and opportunities, and reconvened last week to meet with Ministers, advisors, and each other, to explore ways to maximise our impact. While our primary focus is our respective home cities, our time together in Canberra was invaluable, where we helped each other discuss efficiencies, share policies, and identify areas where we can collectively make a difference. My week in Canberra was exhilarating and eye opening. My top five lessons learnt include: - Our collective voices make us more powerful
-
It is vital to understand the national policy landscape – it connects everything: energy, transport, housing, arts, culture, infrastructure and more
- The Urbis Liveability Rankings provides useful benchmarking and measurement of liveability
-
Future thinking needs to be rudimentary for planning of our cities
- There is a need for cross-sectoral, independent, future focused leadership to drive an agenda of ambitious change and development.
I look forward to updating you on the Urbis Liveability Rankings and sharing insights and opportunities from my meetings at our 2024 Member Event at QV1 on Wednesday, 24 July. Please get in touch to secure your spot.
Shake off the winter chill and embrace the season, with lots to see, do and explore around the Perth region this month. Street artist Rone is opening at AGWA from 1 July to 30 September, the RE//PERTH Winter Arts Festival is awakening the City from 4 to 14 July, and Revelation Perth International Film Festival is on from 3 to 14 July across various venues. NAIDOC week celebrations will be held from 7 to 14 July with this year’s theme of Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud.
Until next time,
Paula Rogers Chief Executive Officer Committee for Perth |

The City of Fremantle has launched its new 'This is Fremantle' brand campaign, an ambitious and captivating showcase of the City's unique story. As part of the Destination Development Strategic Plan 2023-27, it aims to convert awareness of the City's brand and visitor experiences into business. The campaign's hero video invites viewers to discover Fremantle's heart, soul, and eclectic spirit. Congratulations to the team involved for capturing the Freo we love so well.

Joondalup's contribution to new and innovative infrastructure platforms was a key highlight at the Smart City Connect forum held earlier in June, with discussions on intelligent and resilient infrastructure. The City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CORE Innovation Hub, the operator of the Australian Automation and Robotics Precinct (AARP), which sets out a pathway for collaboration on how to facilitate the next steps of technology development at the AARP in Neerabup.

| BONJOUR PARIS, AND THE WORLD |
Last month’s monumental announcement of Perth Airport and Qantas’ $5 billion investment will firmly place Perth on the global map. This development marks a significant milestone in our city’s growth and global reputation as the Western Gateway to Australia. With direct flights from Perth to Paris (bonjour!) taking off from 12 July, just in time for the Olympics, we have an incredible opportunity to showcase the wonders of the Perth region to the world.

The WA and Federal governments are investing $70 million over five years to establish the Clean Energy Skills National Centre of Excellence, run through the existing TAFE network across WA. In Canberra I heard more about the Federal Government's $650m investment in skills and training in TAFE centres, and I believe this initiative will be transformational, offering exciting opportunities for our next generation to gain skills in future industries.

| (ELECTRIC) WHEELS TURNING |
The WA Government is advancing its plan to transition to zero-emission public transport, with the first electric bus built and manufactured in Malaga expected to enter service within the next two months. This new bus is one of 18 electric buses designated for the CBD CAT routes. It’s exciting to imagine how transitioning Transperth's fleet to electric buses will enhance Perth’s public transport both economically and environmentally.
