One of the many joys of being the CEO of Committee for Perth is catching up with our members.
On Wednesday July 24, we hosted our 2024 Member Event on the 35th floor of QV1 – complete with extraordinary 360-degree views and rainbows – to celebrate our vibrant community.

It was the perfect backdrop for networking, discussing liveability and reflecting on the 2024 Perth Perception Survey. The event highlighted our achievements over the past year, introduced the Urbis Liveability toolkit, and presented the survey findings. Thank you to all those who attended. For those who were unable to attend, here’s a brief recap.
Dr Richard Walley OAM, our long-standing Cultural Advisor, provided an impactful Welcome to Country setting a meaningful tone for the event. Thank you, Richard.
The brilliant Kate Meyrick presented the Urbis Liveability Index, a toolkit measuring cities based on six indicators, 32 measures, and 130 metrics. She reminded us that liveability is an economic asset which increases productivity and represents an intergenerational investment. We hope this toolkit will assist in planning for the best possible outcomes for Perth, in the journey towards 2050 and beyond. Committee for Perth has a subscription available to interrogate data and share with members. Please contact me if you would like access or an overview of the results.
Sally Braidwood, from global market research leader Ipsos, presented Committee for Perth's 2024 Perth Perception Survey. This is the fifth wave of the survey since its inception in 2012, now with a future-focused lens. The results were uplifting, especially regarding Gen Z's optimism for Perth in 2050, with 74% expressing a positive outlook. Gen Z also showed strong support for high-density living, and prioritising continuous education and entrepreneurship. The survey highlighted the need to engage with Gen Z and Millennials in future planning and policy development. By generating press and radio coverage, we are advocating on behalf of members to share critical insights from the study that will help shape policies and initiatives. We will also host a webinar in August for all employees of member organisations to take a deep dive into the survey's findings and actions – watch this space.
To close the event, we shared a video of Dr Ben Hamer introducing his Perth 2050 Report, sponsored by Committee for Perth and Scitech, which will launch in November 2024 in the lead up to the Perth 2050 Summit in 2025. Stay tuned! |

Foodies across Perth are in for a delightful treat this month with Plateful Perth and NomNom Festival returning to Perth and Leederville, respectively. Plateful Perth, developed by the City of Perth, dishes up over 65 exciting events and experiences across the City’s best restaurant and bars throughout August. Nomnom Festival is a six-week celebration in Leederville, perfect for discovering hidden gems and revisiting old favourites. Enjoy free public transport on Sundays, and explore the vibrant food scene in the Perth region this month!

FUTURE PROOFING TRAIN NETWORK |
The WA State Government has announced a $1.6 billion contract to upgrade Perth’s rail network, eventually increase train services to every three minutes. Spanning 10 years, the project will enhance the network’s infrastructure and technology, boosting capacity by 40%. Fast, reliable, and frequent rail connections are proven to improve liveability and are essential for a growing population. As advocates for Perth's liveability, we are very excited about this improvement.

“If you want to diversify your economy, you need to create an innovative ecosystem...I see massive opportunities in bringing old ways and new ways together”, says Professor Peter Klinken AC, Chief Scientist of Western Australia in The Guardian’s article exploring WA’s reputation as an innovation hotspot. Professor Klinken AC also attributes the close knit start up community as the driving success of key industries such as scientific research, health technology and space exploration.

AUSTRALIA-INDONESIA MASTERCLASS |
The Perth USAsia Centre is launching a new 6-hour online masterclass on the Australia-Indonesia relationship, starting August 1st. This masterclass explores Indonesia’s approach to foreign policy, democracy and international relations, as well as how Indonesia and Australia work together on trade, security, cultural engagement and partnerships across a range of sectors. The masterclass is self-paced, followed by an online assessment, making it an excellent opportunity to gain impactful insights in a short timeframe about our closest neighbour.

| PERTH'S FIRST TIMBER-HYBRID BUILDING |
Did you know that Westralia Square 2 (WS2) is Perth CBD’s first timber-hybrid office building? This feat of ingenuity and engineering creativity took a sustainable approach to unlock the site's maximum value. By retaining the original 5-storey concrete car park and using a steel-timber hybrid solution to create 12 storeys, the project reused and maximized the existing design. This approach, rather than opting for demolition and rebuilding, resulted in a 70% carbon saving.
