PERTH UPDATE

September 2024

IN THIS ISSUE:

CEO Update | A Vibrant Subi |

Flights Back On Track | Flagship Leadership Program |

Spacecubed MoU | Living with the Tiger

Good afternoon,

What do you imagine Perth will be like in 2050?
Will we be travelling in driverless cars? Will we have reached net zero? Where will you be in 2050?

The reason I’m asking is because work has started on our Perth 2050 report, which we will launch later this year. Renowned futurist Dr Ben Hamer is leading our study, and we’re also partnering with Scitech.

Play

As part of the research, we want to hear what you think Perth should be like in 2050. It is only 25 years away, and now is the time be seriously planning for our city’s future. I encourage you to contribute to this important conversation through the Perth 2050 survey – it only takes 10 minutes to complete – and PLEASE share it with your staff and management, your professional networks, even your family and friends. The more submissions we receive, the more accurate the picture will be of Perth’s vision for 2050. As someone passionate about Perth, this is your moment to make a difference and contribute to our future planning and preparation. Thank you.

Talking about Perth’s future, how exciting to see new plans to activate one of our most precious assets: the Swan River! Currently we have two ferry stops, but I was delighted to hear the Premier announce a further six future stops are being investigated, with another five on the stand-by list.  Imagine future Perth with a fleet of ‘fast’ ferries providing services to commuters, visitors and students!

Winter can be such a tough time for many in the community. I recently took part in the 2024 Food Bank Meal Makers campaign where I came to realise hunger has no post code, with 42% of WA mortgage holders experiencing food insecurity. We also had students from All Saints' College help raise funds for youth homeless services by taking part in the Anglicare WA School Sleep Out. I’ll share the link here again as you might want to donate too.

Looking to put some spring in your step this month? The Futuring Craft Conference, part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial, is at Curtin University from 3-6 September. Featuring local, national and international artists, the Spirit of the Landscape exhibition is on at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre 7 September-6 October. Australia’s largest basketball festival HoopsFest heads to HBF Stadium 19-22 September. The Perth Royal Show is back on at the Claremont Showground 21-28 September – children under 15 are free.

Get your tickets now to hear Australian futurist Dr Keith Suter AM speak about the impacts of our changing world for the WA economy. The Business News event, presented by RAAFA, is on Wednesday 25 September, 2025 from 12.30pm. Committee for Perth members can access a 15% discount when ordering tickets with the code: CFP15

And please, have a think about how you would like to make a difference in planning for the best Perth for our future and stay tuned as we plan for Perth 2050.

Until next time,

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Committee for Perth recently took our weekly team meeting on the road to Canteen 1905, on the ground floor of the RAC building on Wellington Street. The cafe is open to the public, with coffees starting at just $3! RAC is one of our long-time silver members at Committee for Perth and it was great to be joined by Kylie Johnston, Group Executive, People, for an update on their recent activities and community road safety programs, such as the Elephant in the Wheatbelt.

WHAT'S NEW

LIVE

A VIBRANT SUBI

Play

Subiaco’s rejuvenation is continuing apace, with the opening of The Oval, a mixed-use residential precinct. It’s part of the first stage of the Subi East project on the site of the old Subiaco Oval Stadium. While the stadium was demolished after Optus Stadium opened in 2018, the actual oval was kept and re-opened for public use. The heritage gates have been refurbished and an open-air museum has been added, along with playgrounds, BBQ & picnic facilities, and changerooms. Next will be the addition of residential and commercial buildings, with plans underway for 340 apartments.

VISIT

FLIGHTS BACK ON TRACK

Hundreds of visitors are expected to travel to Perth for the Chinese New Year holiday, with China Eastern Airlines restarting the flights between 24 January and 14 February direct from Shanghai. There will be three flights a week, in a repeat of the route put on by the airline earlier this year to mark the Year of the Dragon.

STUDY

FLAGSHIP LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

Play

A wonderful opportunity for leaders within Perth’s culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) community to grow their skills, connections and impact, with a scholarship to the 2025 Signature Leadership Program delivered by Leadership WA. Funded jointly with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the scholarship is valued at over $16,000, with applications open until 30 September.

INVEST

SPACECUBED MOU

Perth has strengthened its reputation as a key player in the global innovation network with Spacecubed signing a Memorandum of Understanding with InnoLab Asia, a leading Vietnamese incubator. It will see expansion-ready start-ups from Vietnam join the Perth Landing Pad program, where they’ll receive market insights, expansion strategies and valuable connections to local networks, corporate partners and investors, whilst simultaneously growing WA’s innovation ecosystem.
