PERTH UPDATE

December 2024

IN THIS ISSUE:

CEO Update | Fabulous Festive Lights

Resources Make It Possible | Top Teaching

Best Tech Fest(ival) | Space For More Jobs

Good afternoon,

This is my last update for 2024, and what a wonderful year it has been!

On behalf of the board and the wonderful Committee for Perth team, I want to thank our members for their continued support and engagement. We’ve also been encouraged by the increasing community interest in our activities to promote big ambitious plans for Perth now, and toward 2050 and beyond.

Play

We hosted 25 events this year, including our first member tour to Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) in May and will host our first Premier's Address this week. We launched new event formats Twilight Talks, and Urban Insights - where together with members, we explore transformations of precincts and regions sharing insights from those who are leading change.

By collaborating with 14 of our members, Committee for Perth was able to deliver an impactful submission in response to the WA Government’s Perth and Peel Urban Greening Strategy with feasible recommendations and ideas. The Urban Greening Strategy is due to be announced in 2025.

Keeping true to our evidence-based leadership, we launched the 2024 Perth Perception Survey with member Ipsos, partnered with member RSM Australia to produce the Powering Perth: The path to global recognition report, and then last month, we released the Perth 2050 report with member Scitech and accredited futurist Dr Ben Hamer.

The Perth 2050 Report was an opportunity to inspire us all to imagine the possibilities for Perth as a decarbonised, diversified and more densely populated region. We see this as our platform to lead into 2025 as we prepare for a Perth 2050 Summit. We would love for you to share with us your ideas for speakers, themes and discussions.

We have more members than ever, and the membership reflects an incredible diversity across 42 different sectors. I call this our magic - with every connection to Committee for Perth, you have the opportunity to engage with different ideas and perspectives, to share within your organisations and networks, to ultimately help make the Perth region one of the world's most liveable

And Perth will be bustling with activities this month. Find locally-made gifts at the different Christmas markets. See a new release or something unique at the outdoor cinemas, pack a picnic blanket for Carols By Candlelight, or if you’d rather hear tunes without the glad tidings, head to the Fremantle Arts Centre Garden for Sunday Music. Throughout summer, City of Perth has lots to do with the family, while Crown has some new & exclusive events, including the world-renowned Christmas-themed Miracle Bar! And, there are some amazing shows coming up in the new year for Fringe World and Perth Festival, so don’t delay and book your tickets now. They make great gift ideas!

Finally, thank you for making this such an important year in the history of Committee for Perth. Thank you for attending, sharing, and collaborating towards a bigger and bolder ambition for Perth.

We all wish you a festive and restful holiday period and look forward to working with you again in 2025.

Until next time,

WHAT'S NEW

LIVE

RESOURCES MAKE IT POSSIBLE

Perth might have enjoyed the economic benefits of our mining boom – but our member Chamber of Minerals & Energy has found nearly half of us can’t even name three resources mined here. It has launched this impressive campaign to bring us up-to-speed on this important sector.

STUDY

TOP TEACHING AT ECU

Perth is home to the Top Business School in the country, when it comes to teaching.

Edith Cowan University’s business and law school has won the category in the AFR BOSS Best Business Schools award, ahead of the University of the Sunshine Coast and Bond University.

INVEST

BEST TECH FEST(IVAL) IN WEST

Australia’s longest running tech & innovation festival, West Tech Fest, starts in Perth today.

Running until 6 December, it showcases the very best of our technology innovation community and creates investment opportunities through a range of experiences with Australian and international tech titans and investors. Get along if you can!

WORK

SPACE FOR MORE JOBS

Play

The sky is the limit for new job creation in Perth which was launched WA Space Industry Strategy in Space Week last month.

WA already has a range of space activities, and now we're getting a commercial satellite assembly facility, jointly funded by the State Government and local company LatConnect 60. As well as transferring technology knowledge, it will provide a place of training for local engineers and students.

VISIT

FABULOUS FESTIVE LIGHTS

Play

From the City of (Christmas) Lights to the Peel canals, there is a festoon of festive light displays to visit as we wait for the man in red to visit us in his sleigh this Christmas.

The Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail is now lighting up the CBD and Northbridge, and the City of Mandurah is putting on another spectacular display. The Synergy Xmas Lights Trail will take you to the best lit homes in your neighbourhood.
